There is an uncertainty about whether this figure is dead or (when the teeth repeat) alive, evoking Freud's labelling of the "uncanny". This is a deeply uncomfortable image which resonates fashionably with gothic themes, signalling a proximity to kitsch. However, this is prevented by the ambiguity in the painting.
The focus on the skull suggests a vanitas subject, but instead of blooming youthful beauty contrasted with death we have here a seemingly alive and healthy person (in parts) who slips into death (in other parts). The difference points to the fact that the traditional vanitas picture was sententious, sermonising towards the generic viewer against earthly pleasures and pride, whereas this picture shows a dead person who is only alive when instructing (the live, pointing finger) and thus the picture's message seems directed inwards and shows a more divided author who is troubled by his insignificance.
Please be advised, a tray frame would add about an inch to the size of the canvas.
