Five Figures (2022)
Acrylic on Canvas
39" x 39" / 100cm x 100cm
We seem to be standing on a ladder looking steeply upwards past a climbing, naked figure as he emerges onto flat ground, on which four threatening male figures loom. The low viewpoint and nakedness of the climbing figure suggest his vulnerability, and the clenched fists and wide-spaced legs of the waiting men are menacing. The potential violence is visible in the hunched and tensed body stances of the four male figures which require little detail apart from a few quick brushstrokes. This is contrasted comically with the seeming unconcern of the naked climber. The atmosphere of impending danger is heightened by the lurid pinks and by the claustrophobic walls that rise towards an indefinite skylight.
Please be advised, a tray frame would add about an inch to the size of the canvas.
