Hyena and three figures (2025)
Acrylic on canvas. Unframed.
36" x 36" / 100cm x 100cm
I wanted to show the scary fangs of the hyena. Hyenas are portrayed in myth as powerful, malevolent and cunning and often take the role of tricksters or magical performers and shapeshifters. In this picture the hyena has upended the male figure, who seems to want to communicate his surprise and displeasure to the viewer. The African primitive female figure fascinated me because of how she was mutilated in order to become sacred. She is unconcerned with the others characters, facing away towards her own world of magic. Does the knight in armour look in open mouthed disbelief or is he trying to lick the hyena’s tail? He remains only a ghostly presence.
Please be advised, a tray frame would add about an inch to the size of the canvas.
