The composition is reminiscent of "The Lamentation of Christ" by Mantegna, which features foreground soles of the feet, but, in this picture, with more exaggerated foreshortening effects. The extreme perspective distracts from the cliched frontal composition of most conjugal photographs. Another source of distraction is the African figurine as a focus for the viewer's and for the man's attention. The picture's conventional interpretation in terms of the overt sexuality of the marriage bed setting as a site of intercourse between the man and the woman is complicated by the alternative, more primitive and more phallic, interpretation suggested by the symbol of the African figurine. Another deviation from a sexual interpretation is the non-alignment of the two figures, with the woman leaning in from the side, looking directly at the viewer, and refusing to share the man's interest in the figurine, which suggests that a more complex explanation of how their relationship is being portrayed may be necessary.
