I am not entirely at home with the characters lurking around me. I am depicted naked to suggest my awareness of my vulnerability, at least in terms of how I feel, even if these characters are only phantoms. Of course there is a powerful whiff of Bosch's Christ Mocked. I am ultimately serious though (my facial expression) and so the amusement is external to me, initiated by others, which I am comfortable with as they are keeping me in order, cutting me down to size, helping me avoid hubris, although, unlike in Bosch's painting, they are being gentle, rather than cruelly setting me up as a sacrifice. There is an ambiguity in terms of how serious or humorous the work is. There is also an ambiguity about who is the most important character, because I am the central figure but I am seemingly controlled by a man with a red bow tie behind me, but then again he is a manikin, which problematises any claim to establishing agency in the picture.
Please be advised, a tray frame would add about an inch to the size of the canvas.
