'Self-Portrait with Family' (2022)

Is the man reaching beseechingly across to hug his lover? Or is he about to assault her? The woman seems afraid as she flinches and draws back, and her baby is unhappy. The title suggests this is a domestic matter, something considered unworthy of police
investigation time until recently. Of course the man could be wanting to make peace (by hugging) and simultaneously to dominate (by beating). The contrast between the man's strong physique and the woman's smallness is obvious, but this cannot settle the matter. And what is the meaning of the man's being white and the woman's being black? Is his being white further evidence of his strength, or of his sense of self- entitlement? The self portrait head in the centre of the composition is odd - does it improperly prescribe a correct attitude such as disapproval of male aggression to the viewer? Or is the self portrait indicating an inability to help or suggest a solution?
Please be advised, a tray frame would add about an inch to the size of the canvas.
