“Self-portrait with three circus performers” (2025).
Acrylic on canvas. Unframed.
39" x 39" / 100cm x 100cm
I wanted to imagine small people in a way that treats them just like everyone else, with dignity and human value. I solved the problem of size by placing myself seated. The performers’ face paint clearly accentuates their importance in the composition relative to the less noticeable artist as mere recorder. I wanted to empathise with them by imagining their embattled lives. They must contend with a constant awareness of not being accepted and not being good enough. The performers' truculence silently yet eloquently conveys the pain of their rejection by society.
Please be advised, a tray frame would add about an inch to the size of the canvas.
