Two Figures Ape and Baby (2023)

Acrylic on Canvas

39" x 39" / 100cm x 100cm

What are these four diverse characters doing together? What are they talking about? The two men are very wary of each other. One has a human head but a manikin's wooden body, and his stern expression is undermined by his only being a puppet. The other is a harlequin character who is in a perversely grey face mask, whose comic persona is contradicted by a seriousness that is precariously based on chance. It is only the baby and the ape who reach out in friendship to each other, their distance from humanness or maturity enabling them to avoid pretentiousness or contradiction.

Please be advised, a tray frame would add about an inch to the size of the canvas.

Screen colours can vary among computers, so please know that there may be a slight variation in real life. Every effort has been made to represent the artwork most accurately to the original painting.
